EVIC
Update #16 - December 2002Things have been relatively quite on the testing front since Update #15. Instead of making changes and testing the engines I concentrated my efforts on revising the EVIC book, updating the electronics and designing a twin.
The book is now Rev.4. The new rev has more text and more pictures. It also includes the 2002 head design and the big bore carburetor I used during the past summer. See Update #15 on the web for details of on these parts: http://rbowes1.11net.com/dbowes
I now have two versions of the EVIC control board.
The PIC16C505 board has been updated with a 3.3 volt DC-DC converter. Those hot 2 watt power resistors are gone! Power consumption is down so 20 AA NiCads are all that you need for a control battery.
This board's parts cost more so the price has gone up to US$125.00.
The photo on the left shows just how far things have come since I started the EVIC project. The very first breadboard is shown top left, the first Mk2 board top right and the new MK2B below them.
I have just finished the first tests on a new board using the more powerful PIC16F628 processor and a PIC12C508 processor to take care of electrical damping when the valves close. I can attach a daughter board to this new control package to control a second cylinder or 4 valves on a single cylinder. The software I am running on it right now is essentially the PIC16C505 code.
I plan to change the code in 2003 to take advantage of the increased memory and some of the features of the PIC16F628 processor. I am not offering this board for sale at this time.
I have begun work on an EVIC twin. My goal is to have it running at NAMES 2003. As the picture (above right) shows I still have a lot to do!
I want to take this holiday opportunity to thank all who have contributed to the EVIC's success. Without your help, advice and encouragement, freely given at club meetings, by E-mail, by phone and at model engineering shows, there would be no EVIC engines. Thank you all.
Happy Holidays,
Dave Bowes
